December 14th, 2016 by Kareo

Kareo Clinical is MACRA-ready! This release includes updates to the Patient Care Checklist for the MACRA Quality Payment Program’s (QPP) Merit Based Incentive Program (MIPS). Of the specialties affected by the QPP starting on January 1, 2017, Kareo Clinical will be ready for our “core” specialties:

  • General Practice
  • Family Medicine
  • Internal Medicine
  • Pediatrics
  • Cardiology
  • Psychiatry
  • OB/GYN
  • Preventative Medicine
  • Emergency Medicine

Previously, Kareo Clinical’s Patient Care Checklist only supported documentation of preventative screenings and exams required under the Meaningful Use (MU) program. With this release, the Patient Care Checklist has been updated to support documentation of additional preventative screenings and exams required under the QPP, coming into effect January 1, 2017. The Patient Care Checklist dynamically generates a list of preventative screenings and exams required on a patient-by-patient basis, based on the patient’s age, gender, and problem list and can be accessed directly from the encounter note or the patient’s chart.

New Kareo Rx Saver Helps Providers and Patients

October 20th, 2016 by Kareo

On October 19, Kareo Clinical was upgraded to include the new Kareo Rx Saver feature plus enhancements to non-clinical notes and templates. You can read the full release notes for more details.

Kareo Rx Saver (Powered by GoodRx)
Kareo Clinical now has the integrated Kareo Rx Saver, a feature that allows providers to offer patients information on the best prescription pricing available in the area as well as any coupons for their medication.

Forty-five percent of Americans have trouble paying for their medication, and for patients who have not filled a prescription, the number one reason cited is cost. This new feature can help improve medication compliance and patient outcomes, whether the provider prescribes electronically or on paper, by reducing out-of-pocket costs for patients.

Medication coupons can be easily be printed and/or distributed via text and email. If a mobile number or email is available in patient demographics, it will automatically populate these, and if not, a text field prompts you to input that information. The experience is seamless and does not hinder or add any additional clicks to the current prescription process, but provides huge benefit for patients and their relationship with their doctor. Read the full release notes for more details.

Non-Clinical Notes Enhancements
Kareo Clinical now allows you to create, save, and “complete” non-clinical notes. Non-clinical notes will no longer require provider sign-off. Non-clinical notes include:

  • Amendments to document patient requests to amend information in their chart.
  • Memo to Record to document non-clinical memos regarding the patient such as patient requested copy of chart, which was provided on date/time.
  • Office Form to document forms created on behalf of the patient such as a Return to Work Form.
  • Phone Note to document non-clinical phone conversation with patient such as patient called and requires nurse call-back.

System administrators and office staff roles now have access to Patient record > Notes and can click + Create Note to create a non-clinical note. Providers and Clinical Assistants will continue to have the ability to click + Create Note to create both clinical and non-clinical notes. Read the full release notes for more details.

Kareo Launches Solution to Reduce Prescription Drug Costs for Patients

October 19th, 2016 by Kareo

Kareo has launched Kareo Rx Saver, a new solution that seamlessly delivers prescription cost savings to patients of physicians using Kareo Clinical. Prescription drug prices often vary significantly across pharmacies, making it difficult for a patient to select the least costly option. To address this, Kareo Clinical presents real-time cost comparisons between local pharmacies during e-prescribing while also delivering money-saving coupons, allowing physicians to help patients select the least costly option. Both the cost comparisons and coupons are enabled by GoodRx, America’s #1 source for prescription prices and savings. For the first time, independent physicians can directly and instantly help lower the cost of care for their patients when prescribing medication.

According to Rob Pickell, Chief Strategy Officer of Kareo, “Studies show that one-quarter of new prescriptions are never filled with cost being one of the primary reasons. This clearly impacts patient health and increasingly means that physicians can’t achieve outcome-based goals under new reimbursement models. With Kareo Rx Saver, physicians using Kareo can help their patients find the most cost-effective options at their local pharmacies, leading to improved adherence rates and targeted outcomes. We are excited to work with GoodRx to deliver this powerful solution.”

“I don’t think many patients shop around to find the best prices for their medications, either because they don’t think they can or they feel like its too much of a burden,” said Mark Miller, MD, a primary care provider and owner of Truhealth Family Care. “Having the new Kareo Rx Saver as a feature in my EHR allows me to save them time and hassle and alleviate these feelings. It’s not often that I get to help save my patients money, and this new feature in Kareo Clinical is going to let me do that, which is a great opportunity. It’s really unlike anything I’ve seen before in an EHR, and I think my patients will really appreciate it.”

Physicians using Kareo will be able to offer patients the following benefits:

  • Collection and comparison of prices for every FDA-approved prescription drug at more than 70,000 U.S. pharmacies
  • Delivery of money-saving coupons via instant text message or email, by printing paper coupons during an office visit, and with GoodRx discount cards available at practices throughout the U.S.
  • Access to the GoodRx app for iOS and Android to check local prescription drug prices anytime and anywhere
  • Further functionality enhancements will provide physicians and patients expected co-pay costs, enabling even better decision making about where to fill prescriptions

Doug Hirsch, co-founder and co-CEO of GoodRx, said, “The popularity of GoodRx grows every day as patients take healthcare cost management into their own hands. The integration with Kareo demonstrates how a healthcare professional can work more closely with patients to reduce costs of prescription drugs in a simple, accessible, and highly effective way. We’re excited to begin this integration with Kareo and look forward to seeing the positive impact within their customer base.”
